Mother allegedly kills 10-year-old daughter in Alaska side-by-side DUI accident

A 10-year-old girl died after a side-by-side off-road vehicle rolled in the Jim Creek Recreation area in

Palmer, and her mother is accused of driving while intoxicated, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers said the crash happened Thursday evening when a side-by-side carrying multiple juveniles rolled onto its roof in the popular recreation area. The girl was found unresponsive with massive head trauma, and she was pronounced dead at the scene after about 30 minutes of CPR. Three other juveniles suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and were taken to a hospital.

Investigators said Hannah Lebel, 32, of Wasilla, was driving the side-by-side with four children aboard when it rolled. Troopers observed an odor of alcohol in the area of the vehicle said Lebel showed signs of impairment. They said they later found six empty beer cans and several cases of alcoholic beverages in the vehicle and determined that Lebel was intoxicated. Witnesses reported hearing one of the children telling Lebel she was driving too fast. The vehicle contained four children - two of Lebel's children and two of a family friend - and troopers determined speed was a factor in the crash and that no one in the vehicle wore a seatbelt.

She was arrested and faces charges including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault and driving under the influence, according to troopers. The crash remains under investigation.
