A GoFundMe has been launched to support the family of 16-year-old Kalena Abelmann, who was killed in a single-car crash on the Pali Highway in Windward Oahu on Thursday, June 18.

Honolulu police said the teen driver lost control of her vehicle in the Kailua-bound lanes, and struck the right concrete barrier.

Police said the vehicle went airborne over the barrier and plunged 50 feet into a ravine, hit an embankment and caught fire. She was ejected into the ravine, where she was pronounced dead at the scene. Excessive speed is believed to be a factor, and investigators said she was not wearing a seat belt.

The fundraiser, titled “Support for the Abelmann Ohana After Tragic Loss,” says donations will go toward funeral and memorial expenses and help ease the sudden financial burdens facing her parents, Rick and Alicia, and her siblings, Kai and Kekoa. It describes Kalena as courageous, creative and adventurous, and says she “found joy in serving at the nearby food bank.”

Organizers wrote that no contribution is too small and encouraged supporters to donate, share the link and keep the family in their thoughts and prayers. The campaign raised $38,661 towards its $40,000 goal as of Saturday.
