Tennessee Trucker Nathan Harrell Praised as Hero After Risking His Life to Save Kayla Gilbert Following I-840 Crash in Rutherford County
RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. — A Tennessee woman is expressing heartfelt gratitude to the truck driver she calls her “guardian angel” after he risked his own life to save her from a potentially deadly crash on Interstate 840.
Kayla Gilbert’s frightening ordeal unfolded early Sunday morning while she was driving home along I-840 in Rutherford County when one of her vehicle’s front tires suddenly blew out.
According to reports, the blowout caused Gilbert to lose control of her vehicle before crashing into the concrete median barrier. Her damaged vehicle came to rest partially inside an active traffic lane on the dark interstate, creating an extremely dangerous situation for both Gilbert and passing drivers.
Gilbert suffered a serious gash to her forehead during the crash that later required eight stitches. Dazed and injured, she remained trapped inside the vehicle moments after the collision.
That is when Nathan Harrell, a passing truck driver, stopped to help.
Harrell quickly realized Gilbert was in immediate danger due to the vehicle’s position in the roadway and began yelling for her to get out of the car.
Officials and family members say Harrell did not hesitate to put himself in harm’s way as he rushed to assist the injured woman.
Just moments after helping Gilbert safely escape the wreckage, another vehicle reportedly crashed into part of the disabled car.
While Gilbert managed to avoid being struck, Harrell suddenly found himself trapped with no clear escape route.
In a desperate attempt to avoid the oncoming danger, Harrell jumped over the nearby concrete barrier — unaware that the crash scene was located on an overpass.
The heroic truck driver fell approximately 25 feet to the ground below.
The devastating fall left Harrell with severe injuries, including five broken bones in his back, nine broken ribs, a punctured lung, and internal bleeding. He remains hospitalized as he continues recovering from the injuries sustained while saving Gilbert’s life.
Despite the traumatic ordeal, Gilbert recently visited Harrell in the hospital to personally thank the man she believes saved her life.
During the emotional meeting, Gilbert embraced Harrell and presented him with a Superman shirt as a symbol of his bravery and selflessness.
According to those close to the family, Harrell said he simply knew Gilbert needed help and never considered walking away from the dangerous situation.
Doctors expect Harrell to recover, although his rehabilitation process is expected to take significant time due to the seriousness of his injuries.
Family members say Harrell is the primary provider for his household and supports three children, making his recovery especially difficult for the family.
The story has touched many across Tennessee and beyond, with countless people praising Harrell as a true hero whose quick actions likely prevented an even greater tragedy on Interstate 840.
