Ada Chapman Doss Identified as Nurse Fatally Shot Outside DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa
Ada Chapman Doss has been identified by family members as the woman killed Tuesday afternoon in a shooting outside DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.
Loved ones say Doss was a wife and mother of two children who had recently begun working as an RN case manager at the hospital. According to information shared on her social media profile, she had been employed with the DCH Health System for approximately four months before her death.
Investigators with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit and the Tuscaloosa Police Department responded Tuesday to reports of a shooting in the hospital parking lot.
Authorities confirmed a female victim died at the scene and said a suspect was later taken into custody.
Hospital officials later released a statement assuring the public there was no ongoing threat to patients or staff and said hospital operations continued without interruption.
“DCH is fully cooperating with law enforcement as they investigate the incident,” the hospital system stated.
Officials have not yet publicly released a motive in the case, and authorities have not officially identified the suspect connected to the shooting.
However, online speculation intensified after a man identified as Matthew Taylor appeared in the Tuscaloosa County Jail booking system Tuesday with a capital murder charge filed around the same timeframe as the shooting. Law enforcement officials have not confirmed whether Taylor is directly connected to the case.
Witness accounts and unverified social media posts also began circulating following the shooting.
One hospital employee reportedly claimed they saw a man shortly before the gunfire who was not wearing a shirt or shoes and appeared disheveled.
Additional social media posts from individuals claiming familiarity with the area alleged the shooting may have stemmed from an attempted robbery in the hospital parking lot. Investigators have not confirmed those claims.
Another individual who claimed to work at the hospital alleged that parking lot security patrols were limited and said homeless individuals frequently camp near the surrounding area. That person further claimed Doss was leaving work between approximately 4:00 and 4:15 p.m. when the shooting occurred. Those allegations also remain unverified.
Family, friends, coworkers, and members of the Tuscaloosa community have since expressed shock and grief over the killing of the nurse, describing Doss as a caring healthcare professional devoted to both her patients and her family.
Authorities continue processing evidence and interviewing witnesses as the investigation into the fatal shooting remains ongoing.
